Anson House
Research material related to the
Peterborough Relief Society, Anson House, and Anson House Committee. The
papers permit the historical analysis of local attitudes and approaches
to social welfare, poverty and relief for aged poor, for a period of
over 130 years.

Barrons, Charlie (Fonds 61)
Collection
includes many items relating to the settlement of Havelock/Belmont
township including books, photographs, mining, mine lists, plus a
ledger from the Cook Cheese Factory of Marmora. Mr. Barrons also
gave an oral history of the area which includes transcripts.

Boreham, Jack
Collection
includes items relating to the building of the Peterborough Post Office
and Market Hall. Correspondence found between J.R.Stratton and John E. Belcher.

Bradburn, Thomas E.
The Bradburn Estate was
created by Thomas Bradburn sometime between 1885 and 1900. The first
Thomas Bradburn had been a general merchant in downtown Peterborough.
However, the family shifted to real estate, and remained in real estate
management confirmed with the creation of the family trust.
Items include deeds, plans, photographs and items relating to William Helm
(1822-1901) who came from
Cobourg to Peterborough about 1866 and operated a machine shop and
foundry on Simcoe Street near Jackson Creek (now the site of the city
bus depot) until 1876. After a few years in Gananoque, he returned to
Peterborough. Helm was widely known, serving on town council, the Fire
Brigade, the Board of Education, with the Mechanics' Institute and the
Masonic Order. There are also photographs relating to William
Cummings (1819-1890), wagon maker, came to Canada from Balnain,
Scotland, in 1843. He was appointed the first Town Constable, 1850, and
then became the town collector. |

Johnston, William
The heart of the
collection is in the letters, 1875-1876, written by William Johnston to
his son who was pursuing a career as a pharmacist. The papers have been
supplemented with strong family and genealogical research and contain
documents related to Alfred J. Johnston. Most of the original letters
have been xeroxed for research purposes, and the letters are also
available digitally. |

Research collection of Martha Anne Kidd,
local Peterborough historian, relating to her work with the Peterborough
Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee, as well as numerous
research notes, and papers on the preservation of historic buildings,
the Ontario Heritage Act, and Heritage Canada. The papers related to all
aspects of her career. The collection includes a large quantity of
historic photographs and negatives.

Newspaper Collections
The Trent Valley
Archives contains different kinds of indexes and aids to help
researchers access Peterborough's newspapers many of which
chronicle daily life in Peterborough. In the Martha Kidd
Collection we have the actual texts of many interesting articles from
the Despatch, the Peterborough Review and the Peterborough Examiner for
1847-1860. We have gathered a sample of these articles which provide
historic snapshots on topics as politics, town matters, sports, social
and religious gatherings, suspicious and tragic deaths etc. The whole
collection is available on computers at the Trent Valley Archives. The
searchable index found in our archives is approximately 1000 pages in
length. These articles may not be reproduced without permission of the
