The Heritage Gazette - old

In the upcoming issue...

We are currently in the editing phase of the upcoming issue. This issue will feature a story from Brooke Broadbent's upcoming Moonrakers, and a review of the book by Fraser Dunford. We have another chapter of Dennis Carter-Edwards' excerpts from the A. J. Grant diary with its wonderful insights into life in Peterborough in 1918, a remarkable year by any standard.  Our editors are looking at starting a three-part autobiography of the life of a Norwood family that went west but never lost their Norwood roots. We have a fascinating examination of a seemingly wealthy family that flamed out and then found new life in the famed Oklahoma land run of 1889; there is a family tree illustrating the relationships between the Haultains, several of whom were very famous. In addition, there will be our usual mix of genealogical inquiries, heritage issues, news, views and reviews.

The Jagship of the Trent

[J. Alex Edmison comments that this item appeared in the Peterborough Review around 1914. "The reference to the Honourable James R. Stratton who died in 1916, caused a minor sensation at the time, and I remember the roars of laughter occasioned when read. I recollect seeing, years after, the yellowed clipping produced from wallets as a sure-fire conversation piece."]

Peterborough Protestant Home 1887

Jane Gifford Hall

[Editor's note: The following report, which appeared in the local newspaper, was glued into the minute books of the Peterborough Protestant Home. These records are in the Anson House fonds at the Trent Valley Archives, fonds 35. This report has very wide interest as it comments on several people, on funeral arrangements, on the handling of infectious disease, and on the importance of the fairly new Nicholls Hospital. The report was written by the secretary, Jane Gifford Hall, and covered the six months from March to September 1887. If you have information relating to any of the names mentioned in this report please let us know.
