If you are interested in putting your talents to use, there are many, many ways to help out. Those with a dramatic flair are invited to take part in our summer ghost walks as tour leaders. If you’re more the library type, volunteers are always needed to process and organize the fascinating archival donations we regularly receive. Got a green thumb? Our building and grounds committee can put you to work. We have opportunities in event organization, volunteer coordination, fundraising and more. Check out the opportunities below to learn more about volunteering for the Trent Valley Archives, or click here to contact us today about becoming a part of our dynamic and dedicated team.

Summer Tourism

If you are a person with a flair for the dramatic and interested in Peterborough haunted history - perhaps a guiding/storytelling position is what you are looking for!  In this position you will work with an enthusiastic group of volunteers and learn more than you ever imagined about the city in which you live! You must be willing to learn a provided tour script and a fair amount of local history. Our tours are also costumed so you will be expected to wear an appropriate tour uniform (ie. cloak or period costume) and carry a lantern (provided by us). All tours run weekend evenings; in all kinds of weather. Those who are interested should email or call us for an interview. If you don’t see yourself at the front of a tour, we can still use your creative skills in planning for new summer tours, and promotion of our summer tour season.

Building / Grounds

From building upgrades to yard maintenance, our building and grounds committee keep the archives in top shape. With the acquisition of our new annex, there are many new projects that need to be tackled from upgrading insulation, to building ramps and pathways. This is the team that also helps us out with special projects like the construction of our replica gallows (thank-you Dave Mahoney!) that make our ghost walks that much more authentic.

Grants

Our grants committee is always looking for new sources of funding for the archives. Anyone familiar with grant-writing will know that this is an area that requires an eye for detail and boundless determination. If you have any background in this area, rest assured your knowledge and skills would be put to good use. If you haven’t worked on grants before but are interested in learning the ropes, this is a perfect opportunity to do so, in a friendly team setting.

Web Squad

Trent Valley Archives has joined the 21st century, and with it has come a new website, email newsletters, facebook, twitter, online book sales, and more. If you have a knack for communications, or a love of social media, join our web squad and help keep Trent Valley Archives current and accessible to our many friends and members.

Library and Archives

Trent Valley Archives regularly receives donations of archival materials. Letters, old photos, diaries, maps, and other archival records from personal collections are entrusted to the TVA for preservation. These donations must be processed, finding aids must be created for them so that they are accessible to the public, and they must be organized and shelved. This is a chance to work first-hand with the resources that make our archives so valuable.

Events

Those with a talent for organizing are always needed for our events committee. Trent Valley Archives runs several events throughout the year from genealogy workshops, to dramatic re-enactments. Our events team has all sorts of tasks, both big and small – all of which help us run the quality events we have come to be associated with.

Fundraising

Trent Valley Archives relies almost exclusively on donations from the community. As a result, fundraising is a key part of our operations. Fundraising tasks can included coordination of fundraising events, implementation of fundraising drives, and the planning of ways to engage and thank our generous donors.

Volunteers

Our volunteers committee is charged with recruiting, coordinating and recognizing our many dedicated volunteers. If you like to work with people, this is the committee for you!

Membership

Our members are the reason we do what we do. They form the bulk of our volunteers, the majority of our donors, and the core of our enthusiastic event participants. The membership committee is responsible for helping to keep memberships up-to-date, for recruiting new members, and for running our annual membership drive. You will be richly rewarded by joining this committee, and becoming involved with this dedicated bunch!

Finance and Budget

If you have a knack for numbers, your skills will be put to good use on our finance and budget committee. We are a small organization and depend on volunteers for this essential service.

Ad Hoc Project Committees

If you are unable to make a long-term commitment, but would still like to help, consider joining one of our ad hoc project committees. These committees work on a project basis and wrap up with the successful completion of the project. Two projects currently in the works are a Moonrakers Re-union Committee, organizing events for next year’s celebration of the 180th anniversary of the emigration of the earliest Moonrakers to our area. We also have a committee that is looking at our long term vision and goals, and future needs and opportunities for expansion. If you would like to get involved in either of these special projects, contact us today!
